Problem: Madagascar has one of the highest rates of child marriage in the world. Because of this, young girls are getting pregnant at young ages and having permanent damage. Many women are also being left by their husbands and are left with severe emotional damage.
Cause: The law in Madagascar was that girls could be married at 14 and boys at 17. A new law was passed in 2007 that stated that girls and boys could be married at 18 years old. Young girls are at a higher risk of having children at a young age, getting sexually transmitted diseases, and having obstetric fistula. Girls are being forced into these marriages and are no able to refuse because they would be cursed. Solution: The United Nations should send in counselors that can help women get the help that they need after being put through a situation like this. I think that because the law was changed in 2007, there has been a decrease in child marriages and that has helped a lot. I think that there needs to be increased enforcement of this law so that older men cannot get away with marrying these young girls and damaging them for life. http://www.unfpa.org/public/op/edit/home/news/pid/12347 |
Problem: The infant mortality rate is 44.88 deaths/1000 live births.
Cause: There are not proper health facilities in Madagascar and children and mothers are not being taken care of during childbirth. There are not proper hospitals or medicine. While these numbers aren't huge, they are far too many and there can be much improvement in this area. Solution: The United Nations could send people in to train doctors so that there can be doctors who can handle childbirth situations. While there will still need to be funds raised and provided, I think that a good start to a solution for this problem is to have the correct people trained. https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/ma.html |
